Openai is releasing GPT-5.6 as a limited preview instead of a public launch. Sam altman told staff the government asked for it, and would be "approving access customer by customer during this preview period."
Well, Anthropic did the same in april with mythos. so the call on when a model ships now runs through washington.
No official comment from Open ai or the white house yet, so it's all sourced reporting for now, but the gap between what the labs have internally and what the public can touch just got wider with this
